How to
Decorate a room
Following late 19th century conventions for wall and ceiling decoration,
a homeowner can convincingly recreate the lush and complex interiors the
Victorian Era is justifiably famous for.
How to
Design a wall
Tripartite Wall Division
Dividing the wall into horizontal bands became fashionable in the latter
part of the 19th century. A three-part horizontal wall treatment would
have included a dado at the base of the wall, a frieze at the top, and
a wall fill between the dado and the frieze. A wallpaper dado capped with
a border was a common substitute for the more expensive wooden wainscoting
and chair rail. The proportions of dado, wall fill, and frieze varied
throughout the last quarter of the century, accommodating changing tastes
and the architectural features of a room.
